I Didn't Get Coached Either.

Edge Advantage exists because I lived the gap — as the leader who wasn't developed, and later as the leader who had to decide whether to keep skipping over the next one.

The Gap Nobody Talks About

I spent nearly four decades in retail sales leadership. I watched the same thing happen over and over: a great salesperson gets promoted, handed a quota, and told to lead a team. Nobody hands them a blueprint. The organization pours every development dollar into the reps — and nothing into the person now responsible for all of them.

That's not being under-coached. That's being systematically skipped over.

Why do strong individual contributors so often struggle as leaders? Why do the skills that made them great — their drive, their competitive instinct, their self-reliance — become liabilities the moment they're responsible for someone else's growth? Why do leaders and their teams plateau?

Organizations identify top performers, promote them, and hope for the best. Nobody teaches leaders how to lead.

That gap is why Edge Advantage exists.

Don't Be Like Charlie

Years ago, I sat across an interview table from a sales rep barely a year into his career — we'll call him Charlie — who'd put his name in for a regional manager opening he had no real business applying for. In good faith, I gave him a fair shot: a straightforward scenario, coach an underperforming rep using that rep's own numbers.

For five minutes, he blamed everything but himself. Poor traffic. Wrong product mix. An unsupportive manager. Everything except his own focus, effort, or attitude.

I stopped him and asked the question that's driven everything I've built since:

"How can you be trusted to lead others

if you cannot lead yourself?"

That question didn't just define his story. It defined mine.

Because if I'm honest, nobody ever asked me that question when I was coming up. I got promoted the way most of us do — because I could sell. Nobody checked whether I could lead. I figured it out in real time, in front of real people, making real mistakes that cost me trust I had to earn back the hard way.

Edge Advantage is the blueprint I didn't have.

What We Actually Believe

Leadership isn't a title. It's a practice — built one deposit at a time in what I call the Trust Account. Every interaction you have with your team is either a deposit or a withdrawal. The leaders who last are the ones who've funded that account with plenty of deposits long before they ever need to make a withdrawal.

We don't develop leaders in the abstract. Everything at Edge Advantage — the workshops, the development curriculum, the coaching — is built around the same three-part standard I hold myself to: Set Standards, Measure Controllables, Be Accountable. Know what's expected. Track it honestly. Own the outcome, good or bad.

This isn't theory pulled from a textbook. It's nearly four decades of sitting across the table from underperforming reps, asking the hard questions, and learning — sometimes the hard way — what actually moves a team.

Built To Grow With You

Edge Advantage Group exists to close that gap. We built a platform for leaders who know their team has more in the tank — and are honest enough to ask whether the ceiling on their team's performance might actually be their own.

Here on EdgeAdvantage.net, leaders get access to a complete development ecosystem: a free Community for leaders who want the conversation to continue.
